Washington's Great "No Inflation" Hoax
Fri, May 09 12:36 PM
|
Billionaire California bond manager Bill Gross calls it "a haute con job." Bloomberg News columnist John Wasik describes it as "a testament to the art of economic spin." More and more shoppers and consumer simply disbelieve it.
The subject of this scorn is the federal government's vaunted Consumer Price Index or CPI. Americans are now beginning to understand that this indicator has its own share of gimmicks not unlike a sub-prime mortgage or the six pages of fine print that accompanies your credit card agreement.

Fri, May 09 12:34 PM
|
If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last 30 years I’m pretty sure you know who Bruce Lee was. :)
If you have, then you may be interested to know that Lee was a very famous martial artist and actor who sparked the first big interest of Chinese martial arts in the West in the 60’s and 70’s.
But besides being an awesome fighter and iconic figure Lee also had some very useful things to say about life.
Here are 7 of my favourite fundamentals from Bruce Lee.

Linda Goldthorpe for U.S. Congress - Michigan's first district
Fri, May 09 10:23 AM
|
"Our government has grown beyond its constitutional boundaries and the American people are suffering for it. America is overtaxed and over regulated. The answers to the problems facing America today cannot be found in more legislation and bigger government—both are roadblocks to prosperity. I believe in the traditional Republican platform of small government and lower taxes. We need to allow the free-market and the economy of America to grow without governmental hindrance. The lumbering mass of federal control should never be mistaken for a benefactor."

Neocons Admit that "War On Terror" Is a Hoax
Fri, May 09 07:27 AM
|
Key war on terror architect Douglas Feith has now confirmed Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Wesley Clark in admitting that the so-called War on Terror is a hoax.
In fact, starting right after 9/11 -- at the latest -- the goal has always been to create "regime change" and instability in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Lebanon so as to protect Israel. And the goal was never really to destroy Al Qaeda.

(in Rod Serling's voice) "Imagine a woman...devoid of common sense, and bloated with ambition, on a journey of self discovery and destruction. This is the tale of one such woman, and a political career careening off the tracks, exploding in the blinding white light of hubris. Join me as we enter....The Twilight Zone." [cue theme music]

‘Goosing Up’ Commodity Prices
Fri, May 09 07:05 AM
|
Here at the Daily Reckoning, our theory is that the feds’ inflation will goose up prices of commodities, gold, consumer prices and oil – but not the real economy. So far, that seems to be what is happening. The CRB commodities index is up 24% since last September. Oil has gone up 25% this year. Natural gas has risen 49%. Gold, meanwhile, has only gone up 4.8% in 2008…but this is after a correction; remember it was over $1,000 just a few weeks ago.

The Daily Show: Actual News?
Fri, May 09 07:00 AM
|
Most of us think so, apparently– Jon Stewart finished 4th in a Pew Center survey last year of “most admired journalists”–tied with names like Tom Brokaw and Anderson Cooper!
So what the hell is going on? He’s a comedian, right? His show is satire, albeit brilliant satire, but he’s making jokes, not reporting, correct?
Well…maybe not.

To woo conservatives, McCain pledges war on 'evil'
Thu, May 08 11:40 AM
|
Adding to Bush 'axis,' McCain singles out China, Myanmar, Sudan and Saudi Arabia for religious freedom
Sen. John McCain has evil on his mind.
On Wednesday, he vowed to take the fight to religious persecution, human trafficking, child pornography and other "evil" if elected. Speaking at Oakland University in Rochester, Minnesota, CNN said the event was part of the Arizona' senators efforts to reach out to conservative voters.
A war for values? McCain rebuked "a tendency in our age to accede to the spurious excuse of moral relativism and turn away from the harshest examples of man's inhumanity to man, to ignore the darker side of human nature that encroaches upon our decency by subtle degree."

A 17-year-old Ottawa high school student invents way to identify and cure the flu
Thu, May 08 07:09 AM
|
OTTAWA–It's not the long-sought cure for the common cold but a 17-year-old Ottawa high school student won a national science competition today by developing a novel way of identifying and perhaps even fighting flu infections.
Maria Merziotis, a Grade 12 student at Hillcrest High School, won a $5,000 first prize and a chance to take her discovery to an international competition in San Diego next month.
A team of three Toronto Grade 10 students, Jonathan Schneider, Josh Alman and Norman Yau from the University of Toronto School, won the $4,000 second prize for identifying genes that help a plant thrive in salty soil.
They will also go to San Diego.
Vandana Rawal, a 15-year-old from Montreal's Centennial Regional High School, won third place and $3,000 for discovering a human gene variation that may help in dealing with bipolar disorder.
Health Canada is already looking at Merziotis's work, which offers a new way of identifying, and perhaps even fighting different influenza strains.
